Spaces for developing new, experimental aesthetics and for social experiments. But also a public space for the audience to engage with the performing arts, with themselves, and with each other. In this book, the spaces of the independent scene in the theater city of Berlin make an appearance themselves.
This richly illustrated publication profiles 33 Berlin venues: a first attempt to depict the breadth and diversity of independent spaces for the performing arts. At the same time, the book also traces the origins of these places—their history and the changes in their function within the specific social and topographical context of the urban landscape.
